ARC: THE AFRICENTRIC READING CHALLENGE

Nothing excites our imaginations quite like the stories we love!

Books—including novels, biographies, histories, short story anthologies, poetry collections, graphic novels, and more—help us understand the ways other people live, why they strive, and how we can become who we crave to be, to achieve our goals, and make our planet a better place.

Aspirational Africentric books depict African characters in countries all over the world (and in science fiction and fantasy, in other worlds and times) living three-dimensional lives, experiencing adventure, striving for glory, and empowering and transforming themselves. These are the books that inhabit your mind, dwell in your heart, and amplify your vision for creating the future.

If you’re a student at a school participating in the Sbai-Shenu program, talk with your teachers about how to enter the ARC (Africentric Reading Challenge). You can win prizes by creating your own “commercial” (video, poster, diorama, comic page, board game, or anything else) to convince your friends to read the same books you’ve loved!

The more you enter, the greater your chances to win!

If you’re looking for excellent aspirational Africentric books, try your local independent bookstore, your school library, and if you’re in Edmonton, the Edmonton Public Library. Below are some of Project Saqqara’s recommendations in the EPL’s collection!
